2012 10 Highest Grossing Films With Blacks In Lead Roles
We’ve made a list of the 10 highest grossing films in 2012 that had Black actors or actresses as main characters. Alongside the film is the total domestic gross (USA only). The world wide grosses are frequently around double the domestic totals. Can you guess what the top grossing film with a Black lead was in 2012? 2. Safe House – $126,181,630
This filmed starred Denzel Washington as one of the main two characters. Another Black actor known for his ability to draw audiences of all kinds.
3. Think like A Man – $91,547,205
This film is based on Steve Harvey’s book of the same name. Love it or hate it the film certainly reminded Hollywood that Black films can make money when done well.
4. Flight – $90,989,000
Another flick starring Denzel Washington – this film falls into the category of Oscar bait. Denzel Washington has received a best actor Golden Globe nomination for his acting in it.
5. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection – $65,653,242
A list of high grossing black films would be incomplete without Tyler Perry’s name on it.
6. Red tails – $49,876,377
George Lucas produced the film and reportedly put in $58 million for the budget and nearly $35 million for distribution – nearly $100 million of his own cash. His goal was to prove Black films could be successful. While we know this is true based on the movies above this one on the list, Lucas didn’t help the cause.
7. Django Unchained – $42,990,000
This film is certainly not finished earning money. It has yet to complete its first weekend at the box office. It will probably wind up with around $100 million in earnings.
8. Cloud Atlas –Â $26,682,072
This film stared Halle Berry as one of two main characters alongside Tom Hanks.
9. Alex cross – $25,826,970
This film didn’t do so well domestically, but ended up being profitable when you add in the worldwide box office earnings.
10. Sparkle –Â $24,397,469
The film featured Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston in her last ever acting role.
