Isaiah Washington Returning To Grey’s For Sandra Oh’s Exit
It shouldn’t be a spoiler at this point that Sandra Oh (aka Christina Yang) is leaving Grey’s Anatomy at the end of the current season. The announcement was made back in 2013, presumably to prepare fans for such a monumental loss. The show has had more than its fair share of character deaths and departures in the past, but never of such a major character. As the best friend of Meredith Grey, and one of the the 3 remaining original interns, Christina Yang’s departure will be felt deeply by viewers.
In lieu of her leaving, Shonda Rhimes is bringing back a character who hasn’t appeared since the third season. That character is Preston Burke, played by Isaiah Washington, Yang’s first, and arguably most serious love interest in the show.Yang abandoned him at the wedding altar, and their relationship never had closure.
Here’s what series creator and show runner Shonda Rhimes had to say on the return of Burke”
“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”
The actor was forced to leave the show after making homophobic comments, and has never returned. He’ll reportedly be back for just one episode (Hypable).
