Seasoned Black Actors Headline Carribbean Remix Of Shakespeare’s Macbeth
Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Blair Underwood, Harry Lennix, and Evan Ross will star in a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth titled Macbett. The film is a Caribbean-set remix of the English play, and will be filmed in Jamaica and Puerto Rico beginning in September 2013.
According to Carribbean 360:
The new film’s storyline revolves around General Macbett (Howard) who meets the “weird sisters,” rulers of earth, water, fire and sky as the spirit daughters of Mother Africa.
As the strange spirits manipulate Macbett by telling him he will soon become king, Macbett and his beautiful wife Lady Macbett (Lathan) become obsessed with ambition…”
Three of the film’s stars are very familiar with play adaptations and theatrics. Terrence Howard appeared on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 2008. Sanaa Lathan starred in a Broadway run of A Raisin in the Sun. Blair Underwood starred in Broadway’s Black version of A Streetcar Named Desire in 2012.
The film will be directed by Aleta Chappelle, who has extensive experience in casting, but few directorial credits on her resume.
