Lenny Kravitz Will Play Marvin Gaye

by on November 27, 2012

Singer-Songwriter Lenny Kravitz is officially confirmed to play Marvin Gaye in an upcoming biopic by director Julian Temple. The movie won’t be produced until 2013, so the release date may be a year or two off.

According to an article on Examiner, the film will focus on Marvin Gaye’s life during the  1980s and conclude with the events leading to his death in 1984.

Controversy is already floating around this casting news because Lenny Kravitz does not closely physically resemble Marvin Gaye. Zoe Saldana received similar backlash upon taking the role of Nina Simone after Mary J. Blige backed out of the film.

What do you think of the controversy surrounding casting for biopics? Should actors have the same skin tone as the real person in order to play the role?
