Tyler Perry Signs TV Contract With OWN Network
Tyler Perry has signed an exclusive contract with Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. According to the New York Times, shows like For Better or For Worse will continue to air on TBS. Perry has agreed to direct and produce 2 entirely unique shows for Winfrey’s network. This deal will mark the creation of the first original scripted show on the OWN network.
In a press release Oprah Winfrey gave this quote expressing her excitement:
“I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.”
Perry expressed his gratitude as follows:
“It’s a dream realized to partner with Oprah and bring scripted programming to OWN,” Perry states. “She has accomplished so much with the network and I’m excited to work with her to be a part of its continued growth.”
The contract prevents Tyler Perry from creating his own network (like the rumored Tyler TV).
If Tyler Perry’s shows earn him a prime time slot someday between Monday-Thursday, that will be an improvement over TBS. Are We There Yet was moved to noon this fall, and most of Perry’s other shows have been pushed to Friday nights.
There are a lot of criticizers of Perry’s works, but I think most agree that there is merit to be found in at least one of his films or plays. How do you think Oprah’s audience, which includes women of all ethnic backgrounds, will react to Tyler Perry programming on the network? Will they remain supportive?
Do you think Oprah’s network will censor Perry’s scripts to some degree?
